“I’ll Learn to Play an Instrument” – A Symphony of Misplaced Musical Ambitions

"I'll Learn to Play an Instrument" - A Symphony of Misplaced Musical Ambitions

Learning the Violin: A Symphony of Joy and Laughter

There comes a point in every adult’s life when they think, “Why not pick up a new hobby?” For me, this moment of optimistic folly was deciding to learn to play an instrument. Not just any instrument, but the violin – known for its soulful melodies when played well and for sounding like a cat in distress when not.

The Start: A Burst of Enthusiasm

My musical journey began with a burst of enthusiasm and a second-hand violin. I was convinced I was just a few lessons away from producing the sweetest symphonies. “How hard can it be?” I naively thought, imagining myself serenading family and friends with ease.

The Reality Check: First Notes

The first reality check hit with the first note. It sounded more like a screech than anything remotely musical. Undeterred, I pressed on, convinced that practice would make perfect. However, practice only made my family develop an almost supernatural ability to find errands to run whenever I took out my violin.

The Impact on My Household

My dog, a loyal creature who once adored everything I did, howled in despair whenever I practiced. It seemed he was either trying to drown out the sound or joining in on what he thought was a communal howling session.

Neighbors began to give me curious looks, reserved for someone oblivious to their lack of skill but enthusiastic enough to be endearing. The local cats, however, were my most attentive audience. They gathered outside my window, perhaps offering moral support or checking if one of their own was in trouble.

Perseverance and Learning

Despite the less-than-musical sounds emanating from my violin, I persevered. YouTube became my teacher. I followed along, screeching and scraping to my heart’s content. I learned about terms like ‘vibrato’ and ‘pizzicato,’ which I used liberally in conversations to sound more accomplished than I was.

The Big Moment: A Family Performance

After months of dedicated practice, my big moment came. It was a small family gathering where I decided to showcase my newly acquired skills. Standing with the violin in hand, I faced a captive audience. As I played, I noticed mixed expressions: amusement, surprise, and perhaps a hint of pain. Nonetheless, they all clapped heartily at the end.

Lessons Learned: The Joy of New Hobbies

Although my violin playing didn’t lead to any concert invitations, it taught me valuable lessons. Starting a new hobby is not about mastering it, especially later in life. It’s about the joy of trying something new, the laughter, and the shared moments of self-deprecation. It’s okay to be wonderfully, hilariously average at something.

A Salute to Hobby Enthusiasts

So, here’s to all the adults picking up new hobbies without regard for talent or proficiency. May your endeavors bring you joy, your failures bring laughter, and your life be richer for both.
